Historically, the elephant had been the 'vehicle' that carried
great Maharajas around their kingdoms to meet their subjects.
Despite mammoth sizes, the elephants are probably one of the
gentlest animals found in nature, making them irresistibly
endearing. It wasn't long before artists and craftsman started
decorating royal jewelry, carving royal marble monuments,
painting murals and so on.... art forms that have since then
been passed on from generation to generation.
Today,
many centuries and many elephant tales later, 'haathis' - as they are called in
Hindi - continue to convey a royal, steady and gentle feel, that makes an art
collection without them incomplete
